Best Man Wedding Speech
You’ve probably been given advice of what to do in a best man wedding speech, plus in my own research I’ve only found tips and ideas of what to do, but I’ve never seen any advice of what NOT to do!
So in this post I’m going to discuss a couple of my favorites.
I would also like to point out before we get into the speech that as the best man it is also your job to remind the groom of all of his duties. If he hasn’t brought it up yet then you might want to bring up some groomsmen gift ideas so he doesn’t forget to thank all of his boys for supporting him.
The first no-no is in the preparation, or in the lack of preparation. One of the biggest mistakes any best man can make is not preparing their speech properly. There are a few lucky people who are natural at making speeches. They can get up without warning or preparation and talk to an audience as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Most of us (myself included) are not like that at all. One of the first best man speeches I gave I made a couple of notes of what to say just a few minutes before I had to stand up and give it. I planned to just get up and give an off-the-cuff speech.
I had what actors call stage fright. When I got up to speak, everything in my head which I had planned to say had vanished. I was completely lost. As I mentioned earlier luckily I had a couple of notes in my pocket so I reached for those and then (only just) helped me through this awkward situation.
The lesson I learned at the time was never to just get up for my best man wedding speech without having a properly planned speech written down and memo cards with bullet points to keep the speech flowing and structured.
The next most important what-not-to-do advice is to make the best man wedding speech as if it were the after dinner speech at the stag night. Most of the guests may be elderly relatives and you must remember this before launching into vulgarity and foul language.
There is no need to use offensive language in a best man wedding speech. The best best man speeches are clean and clever. Use with to get laughs, not shock humor.
Last and certainly not least, is not to tell-tale secrets which the groom may have on things he may have done in the past. Most people have skeletons in their cupboards and you don’t want the bride and groom entering a new life together with remnants of the past haunting it.
Yes give stories of what the groom has done in his life, but don’t make those stories about things you know the groom would not want the bride or the bride’s parents to know about.
